Winner Spotlight: Beijing 37 mHealth Provides One-Stop Shop for Hypertension Patients
When Wanhui Dai‘s mother was diagnosed with high blood pressure, he wanted a way to help her. When he looked at the market of products available, though, he didn’t see exactly what he wanted.
So Dai decided to create it. The result is Beijing 37 mHealth, a mobile app and accompanying blood pressure cuff that allows hypertension patients to monitor, track and analyze their blood pressure data.
The pitch for 37 mHealth won the health category at the Beijing Challenge Cup last week. After the competition we caught up with Dai and his COO Qingbo “Bella” Feng to chat about their product and what the future holds.
Tell me a little bit about Beijing 37 mHealth.
Dai: Our company is a service for patients with high blood pressure.
You pitched with a cool device in hand. Can you tell me about how this relates to your company?
Feng: We have two products. One is our app, our main product. We also have a blood pressure monitor machine. We are providing the service from the app. The blood pressure cuff monitors the patient’s blood pressure and can upload the data to the app wirelessly. It makes the experience more convenient and easier.
Our service includes tracking of blood pressure data, and we also provide data analysis to users. We offer ways for them to control their blood pressure. Also we let them consult with doctors online and they can make an appointment through the app. We already have 5,000 doctors on our app.
To make the long story short, if you are a hypertension patient, you can get all of the services you need here in our app.
Is it something that a doctor has to prescribe?
Feng: No, at this point, it starts at home. You get diagnosed as a hypertension patient, and this is something you can do to control your blood pressure. It makes things easier.
How did you get the idea? What’s your inspiration?
Dai: My mom has high blood pressure and I wanted to give her some tools to control her blood pressure.
Feng: David has a strong entrepreneurial background. He’s had a very strong entrepreneurial experience once before.
How long have you been working on this?
Dai: Just over one year.
Now that the app and the product are working, what are you next steps?
Feng: We are trying to make the user experience much better and more comfortable. We are going to go out and get more contracts with insurance companies so that we can grow bigger. Then we want to market our product to more people so they know about it and use it.
Who are your customers?
Dai: We get money from insurance companies and pharma companies; they are our customers. Our users are the people who download and use the app. We already have 2 million users.
How big is the market size?
Dai: One quarter of the Chinese population has hypertension.
Feng: And that’s the data from the Chinese officials. Our challenge is going out and finding these people to let them know our product.
What is the hardest part about being a startup?
Dai: Just getting the word out is hard. Trying to get doctors to use our platform to help their platform is very hard.
Feng: Another hard part is just insisting on this dream. It’s very hard. Many people fail because they just give up. For him, no—he has great persistence. It’s very American!
What’s the best part?
Dai: We have 2 million users and it’s very rewarding. It gives us a great sense of accomplishment.
Feng: We have gotten feedback from our users and they’ve said, ‘Thank you for creating such a great app, such great software.” We’re really happy to hear such feedback.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Feng: We are very small now, but we have great ambitions to help people. We will grow bigger and bigger. We just need time. We know we still have a long way to go, but we will not give up.
